In any correction situation, the goal will always be effective communication and a change of heart and behavior. The goal is never to call a person OUT but instead to call the person UP to a higher level – to empower the person to become their own best! In the event of a violation of this Code of Conduct, an LAF representative will complete a Violation Report, which will be shared with the family at the parent meeting and kept on file. The Learning and Families Board of Directors reserves the right to limit or revoke Support Community and/or Co-op participation in the event of multiple violation reports.
Violations below refer to any that occur in a given academic year. However, records of violations will be kept on file for at least seven years and may be consulted by the Board of Directors and/or Disciplinary Committee at their discretion.
First Violation
- Documentation of violation and review of Code of Conduct expectations
- Student receives a verbal warning
- Parent/guardian notified by email or text of the violation
- No parent/guardian or student signature is needed for a first violation
Second Violation or First Serious Violation
- A serious violation is defined as
- any behavior with malicious intent towards another student or adult
- the appearance of being under the influence of an illegal substance
- possession of illegal substances and/or weapon(s)
- sexual activity, sexual harassment, or sexual assault
- Immediate removal from LAF premises or events will be enforced in response to first serious violation
- Board member completes a Violation Report, including a signature from the student and the reporting adult (if there is one).
- Board member contacts parent/guardian and arranges a meeting with the student, parent/guardian, and at least two Board members. Parent/guardian and student are given a copy of the Violation Report at the parent meeting. The report must be signed by the student’s parent/guardian and returned to a Board member prior to attending an LAF function. If it is a Co-op related violation, a signed report must be returned to a Board member by the next attended Co-op day in order to return to LAF Co-op.
- Student must submit a paragraph to Board member explaining what they did that was wrong, why it was wrong, and how they plan to improve their behavior and prevent repeating the violation. The paragraph must be signed by the parent/guardian and returned to a Board member. Must be completed prior to attending an LAF function, including Co-op. The paragraph will be attached to the Violation Report when received.
Third Violation
- Board member completes a Violation Report, including a signature from the student and the reporting adult (if there is one). This report must also be signed by the student and parent/guardian.
- Upon a third violation, the Board of Directors will consult with the Disciplinary Committee to receive a recommendation on next steps.
- The Disciplinary Committee will discuss the appropriate follow-up actions, which may include specified consequences, the request of a parent/guardian to chaperone student at all events (including Co-op classes), suspension from classes, or even removal from the Co-op and/or Support Community. Once the Disciplinary Committee makes its recommendation, the LAF Board of Directors will vote on the action to be taken. The student may not attend LAF functions or return to LAF Co-op until a decision is made by a majority vote of the Board of Directors and the necessary follow-up actions are taken.
Procedures for Handling Academic Dishonesty at LAF
Academic dishonesty violations are handled in a unique way. These will count as breaches as outlined below, but they will be subject to these additional steps.
VIOLATION #1
- A violation report will be completed and filed.
- Facilitator will determine whether to allow the assignment to be redone or issue a failing grade on the assignment
- If the violation is plagiarism, the student watches a video on how to avoid plagiarism and submits a one paragraph summary of the video lesson to a member of the Board of Directors before readmission to the class in which the offense occurred
VIOLATION #2
- A violation report will be completed and filed.
- Student receives an F on the assignment
- Student writes an essay signed by the parents identifying the problem that led to the academic dishonesty and offers solutions to the problem. The essay must be submitted to a member of the Board of Directors and approved before readmission to the class in which the offense occurred.
VIOLATION #3
- A violation report will be completed and filed.
- Student will be permanently removed from the class in which the offense occurred for the remainder of the school year, without tuition and or lab/supply fee refund.
Academic Disciplinary Procedure
In any correction situation, the goal will always be effective communication and a change of heart and behavior. In the event of a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy, the Faciliator will follow the procedure outlined below.
BREACH DEFINED
- Missing assignment
- Failing grade on test
- Poor class participation
- Failure to fulfill duty on project or assignment
- Unexcused absence
- Academic dishonesty
- Arriving to class unprepared
If a parent discusses a problem or challenge with the facilitator, and an acceptable solution or plan is created prior to the problem, any of the above items will not be considered a breach. The goal is for the parent and the facilitator to be working together as a team for the best academic interest of the student and the class as a whole. The plan should be put in writing and emailed between the parent and facilitator.
First Breach
The facilitator will document the first Academic Integrity breach and share the report with the parent and the Board of Directors. It will be kept on file in the LAF Office. The parent will talk to the student and find a suitable resolution.
Second Breach
The student will be unable to attend LAF Classes until they meet with a parent, the facilitator, and members of the Board of Directors to identify the problem and brainstorm a solution. Once a plan is decided, the student will need to write a short summary of what they perceive was the problem and the plan to prevent it from recurring. The summary needs to be approved by a parent and by the Board of Directors before they can return to class. The documentation of the second breach, along with the summary of the problem and plan will be kept on file in the LAF Board Office. If it is an elementary-aged student, this will need to be written by the parent and approved by the Board of Directors.
Third Breach
After a third documented breach of the Academic Integrity Policy, the student will be unable to attend LAF Classes until they meet with our Disciplinary Committee, which then makes a recommendation to the Board of Directors. The Board will then deliberate and inform the family of their decision about how to proceed.
